Gold making charges in India, explained
The metal rate is only part of a jewellery bill. A seller may add making or value-addition charges as a percentage, per gram or fixed amount. Ask how the displayed charge is calculated.
A real bill, piece by piece
Suppose a 10 gram 22K chain uses the current ₹14,770/g reference and a hypothetical 12% making charge:

How to compare making charges
- Ask whether the charge is a percentage of metal value, a per-gram amount or a fixed fee.
- Compare the same design category, net metal weight and purity across shops.
- Separate stones, wastage/value addition, hallmark fees, discounts and exchange deductions.
There is no single nationwide “fair” percentage for every design. Get every charge in writing on an itemised bill. Resale and buyback policies differ, and recovery of the original making charge is not guaranteed; ask the seller to state its terms in writing.

What is a normal making charge on gold jewellery?
There is no single verified percentage for every item or shop. Design, production method, brand, stones and promotions matter. Ask for the charge in rupees and as a percentage of the net gold value, then compare itemised quotes.
Is GST charged on making charges too?
For a normal jewellery transaction, the verified registry rule is applied to the full transaction value, including making charges. The calculator models that rule for the fields entered but cannot know omitted shop-specific charges.
Can I negotiate making charges?
A seller may or may not negotiate its displayed board or making charge. Ask for every charge in writing on an itemised quote and compare the total with another seller.
What is wastage or VA on my bill?
Some shops separate making, wastage and value-addition lines. Add all of them when comparing quotes; the calculator result is only an estimate when one of those fields is omitted.
